Isn’t It Random

My colleague Chris shared this interesting post.  Funny now – and it may even be funnier in 10 years.  Enjoy!  HAPPY FRIDAY!!

‘New York Times’ Bans the Word ‘Tweet’

by Choire posted @8:42 AM

Phil Corbett, the latest standards editor at the Times (maybe the greatest job in the world?), has issued a proclamation! Yesterday, the following memo went out, asking writers to abstain from the invented past-tense and other weird iterations of the magical noun-verb “Twitter.” His case isn’t terrible, actually—and he offers this terrifying vision: “Someday, ‘tweet’ may be as common as ‘e-mail.'” Oh dear. Well, read for yourself and decide.

How About “Chirp”?

Some social-media fans may disagree, but outside of ornithological contexts, “tweet” has not yet achieved the status of standard English. And standard English is what we should use in news articles.

Except for special effect, we try to avoid colloquialisms, neologisms and jargon. And “tweet” — as a noun or a verb, referring to messages on Twitter — is all three. Yet it has appeared 18 times in articles in the past month, in a range of sections.

Of course, new technology terms sprout and spread faster than ever. And we don’t want to seem paleolithic. But we favor established usage and ordinary words over the latest jargon or buzzwords.

One test is to ask yourself whether people outside of a target group regularly employ the terms in question. Many people use Twitter, but many don’t; my guess is that few in the latter group routinely refer to “tweets” or “tweeting.” Someday, “tweet” may be as common as “e-mail.” Or another service may elbow Twitter aside next year, and “tweet” may fade into oblivion. (Of course, it doesn’t help that the word itself seems so inherently silly.)

“Tweet” may be acceptable occasionally for special effect. But let’s look for deft, English alternatives: use Twitter, post to or on Twitter, write on Twitter, a Twitter message, a Twitter update. Or, once you’ve established that Twitter is the medium, simply use “say” or “write.”

Make of it what you will. But, my quibble? I cannot believe he takes that horrible turn in the last sentence! No one “says” anything on Twitter! That’s pollution of the language. One either WRITES or one SAYS. I will never accept the argument that these words are interchangeable!

(nerd alert) These are so cool!

I haven’t done one of these in a while but they’re fun to do every so often – thinking of fun things puts me in a good mood.  I used to do these all the time on my MySpace blog (“Mom, what’s a MySpace?” will be the new “What’s an album?” question) … So here’s a list for 2010!

Faves of the moment (in no particular order):

I love Boston in the springtime! 🙂

• The fact that I’m writing this post on a BlackBerry…while riding on a train!
• My wedding is in 53 days!
• Free pastry day yesterday at Starbucks
• Glee is coming back next month
• I have the most awesomest bridesmaids ever
• Hearing a song come up on my iPod and then imagining everyone dancing to it at the wedding
• 90s Fridays in me and Meg’s office!
• 5ive’s “All Around” (still one of my all time fave feel-good songs)
• Wearing flip flops for the first time again
• New season of Saving Grace this summer
• Checking things off the bridal checklist
• Max and Dylan’s in downtown Boston
• My coworkers when we’re all beyond stressed and get into that end of day silly mode. It’s good to laugh with the people you spend most of your time with 🙂
• So many friends who got engaged and had babies so far this year
• Hearing Teddy Geiger while sitting at a bar, drinking a glass of Prosecco and sitting next to a window opened onto a bright spring day.  It’s like I’m 25 all over again.
• When the summer concert venues finally release their summer schedules!
• Getting RSVP postcards in the mail
• Afternoon snack of oranges and a handful of mixed nuts
• The new Saturday hip hop abs class at the gym. I miss my girl Marissa but you can’t beat a high intensity aerobics workout that includes “Humpty Dance” and “Plane to PR” in the same set.
• Sliced salami
• Ecco in East Boston
• Catching up with old friends on the phone (especially those who allow you to keep them on speakerphone so you can keep cutting out rehearsal dinner invites, lol)
• I am getting to marry my best friend and soulmate in front of our closest friends and family in less than 3 months
• When the episode of Glenn Beck is over so we can go back to everything else on the DVR, lol
• Finding an old favorite album I only have on cassette in the used CD sale bin at Newbury Comics
• Getting a pedicure
• The new Liberty of London line at Target
• Two and a Half Men
• My blue wedding shoes. I cannot wait til after the wedding so I can wear them out of the house, haha!
• Long text message conversations with Kate
• Sunshine!!
• Ricky Martin’s “Drop It On Me” (featuring Daddy Yankee)

What are some things making YOU smile this week?

New post coming soon!  I promise.  I’m sorry I’ve been so neglectful. 😦  As most of you probably know, with exactly 2 months to go from today (!), I’ve been kinda busy planning this event thing happening in May. 😉  But I’ll try to post something here very very soon.

In fact, one post I’m waiting on putting up is a result of all this wedding planning … while good things can come out of it – like finding amazing vendors (Joe, Deb, Ron F, Em, Stephanie, Carol, etc…), bad things also do too – like finding not-so-amazing vendors (ahem, Kay’s!).  So I’m waiting on this particular situation to FINALLY come to an end … but when it does, oh boy, believe me, you will get to hear all about it …

In the meantime – planning a St. Patrick’s Day party this year?  Check out my post with some very clever ideas to help you host a lucky event. 🙂

Random notes for the evening:

  • I got a fantastic email from Rachel Platten last night thanking me for a review of a show I saw her perform at in April with Lucy Woodward and Toby Lightman.  Awesome.  It reminded me how much I miss going to shows (at one point I was seeing 1 – 2 concerts a week!).  And how cool musicians who appreciate fans are.  Time to tap the new music again, soon.  And thank you Rachel and Toby for seeking me out. =)
  • Also, Rachel is playing tomorrow night around 9/9:30 at Cafe 939 on Boylston in Boston.  You should go.  Seriously.
  • Glee, I love ya.  But I feel like next week’s season finale (Wednesday at 9 p.m. on FOX) is going to leave us all hanging and leave me very, very mad because of it.  Also, please stop focusing on one storyline and then pretending it never happened for 6 weeks until you decide to focus on it again.  It’s breaking up the character consistency.
  • I wish we could leave Tiger Woods alone.  But we won’t.  We have a vicious cycle when it comes to the nature of celebrity.  It’s like that couple that crashed the White House party or Bubble Boy or even the Gosselins.  We don’t want to give them their 15 minutes but we can’t help it and so we talk about the time about how we hate talking about them and about how they’re all media ho’s … but then by talking about them, we’ve now granted them their wish.  D’oh.
  • Also sending love out to The Soup on E!, Bones on FOX, and Tabatha’s Salon Takeover.
  • Have you seen the wedding blog yet?  http://markandmem.wordpress.com.  Just checking. 🙂
  • Is it just me, or is everyone having trouble with maintaining personal space lately?  On the train, multiple times at the gym, walking to South Station…
  • Grammy nominees announced tonight!
  • Also tonight: the lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center.  I’ve already decorated the house for the holidays (and even received 2 Christmas cards!).  I’m really ready for the season this year.
  • While I love you, too, social networks, sometimes nothing fixes a bad mood better than a nice conversation with an old friend.

Holidays are almost here.  What’s on your wish list this year?

From the movie "Holiday Inn" - *love* that film!

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of exciting milestones for my friends, colleagues, family – and even for me and Mark!  Birthdays, weddings, engagements, babies, academic achievements…

Some of these moments have literally made me freeze.  And in this frozen moment, I suddenly think, I can’t believe this is happening.  I can’t believe I’m here.  Shopping for bridesmaids dresses this weekend and watching my sister try on a stunning a dress to be a maid of honor in MY wedding, well, it took my breath away.

Sometimes I think we are so busy going through the motions of living that we forget to stop and realize what we are actually living.

Today at lunch, talking with Abby and Katie, was a real eye opener for me.  We talked about adult things – houses, families, weddings, jobs.  Afterwards I couldn’t stop thinking about how these were 2 girls who, 7 years ago, were pushing me down the dorm hall in a rolling office chair alongside Katie’s then-boyfriend (now husband), trying to see which of us would reach the other end first.  And now, we’re all grown up!

Then again, 7 years IS a long time.  So maybe it’s me.

It also makes me look at where I am and marvel at it all.  Like the line in Rent, “How did we get here, how the heck…?”

But the best part?  I don’t regret a single thing.  Sure, sometimes the “what if’s” come up, out of curiosity.  What if I stayed on the radio job at WLIR instead of the career move to Video Design Software?  What if I stayed up in Amherst that extra year?  What if I never left GDF?  What if I never left Long Island?

And the answer is: I wouldn’t be here.  And I LIKE being here. Even if I sometimes recoil in horror at how … grown up we are (much as we try to deny it with late nights at Steve & Cristina’s or dancing out in town).  Maybe not horror.  Maybe just amazement.

“Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” (RIP, John Hughes)

On a lighter note, here’s a wedding update:

  • We bought our wedding bands and they’re all ready for the big day!
  • We booked the florist (still need to meet with the centerpiece florist) and designed the bouquets, boutonnieres, and ceremony flowers
  • We booked the photographer
  • We looked at bridesmaid dresses and narrowed it down to two options
  • We decided on the theme for naming the tables
  • We started moving forward on the honeymoon planning
  • We got most of the bridal party together for the first time ever this past weekend…and had an amazing time!

So we are making some solid progress.  We had a hiccup a few months ago when we realized how very EXPENSIVE a wedding is, but with some budget and priority rejiggering, we’re back in planning mode hard core.

I love it.  I can’t wait.  If this weekend was any indication, this wedding is going to be incredible.  We are surrounded by the most amazing, wonderful, loving and fun people.*

And I can’t wait to be Mrs. D. 😉

Question: if your self 10 years ago met you now, what’s the one thing they would be most shocked/surprised/amazed at?

Yeah, a lot of us unfortunately looked like this at one point in time...and never thought it would go out of style!

*As I type this, my entrance song for the ceremony just came on.  Crazy!!

  • One year and four days until the wedding!!  We are going to the Holiday Inn in Mansfield and staying in one of the suites to help kick off the (pre?) anniversary
  • Happy belated to my Mom, and Happy Day-After Mother’s Day to all those mothers out there!
  • Cannot wait for some big season finales this week – Kitchen Nightmares, Bones, just to name a few….
  • This is a useful article
  • Pre-congrats to my sister Cordie, who graduates college next week.  I am so proud of her!!  She also was awarded a teaching fellowship in New York, bravo!  (Brava?)
  • And this slideshow is amazing eye candy
  • One year ago today Jennie and Tim were married (congrats! and belated congrats to Jo and Darrell!) and we were cruising in the Caribbean [fun fact – I took the photo in this blog header on that cruise]
  • I’m jonesin’ for new jeans, sunglasses, a new watch, and a spring coat

Have a lovely Tuesday. =)
